While we here at The A.V. Club aren’t so radical as to take up all the popular pop culture battlecries of the day—your “Fuck Batman”s, and their ilk—we do have to occasionally question why we need quite so many dang superheroes running around, punching stuff and saving the day. After all, don’t we already have dogs? Dogs are pretty great, too, and they tend to have way less drama about their tentpole blockbuster casting decisions. Why not give them superpowers, instead?
All of which is to say, we’re pretty happy to have picked up this little tidbit from yesterday’s glut of Warner Bros. superhero movie news: Batman might be bowing out for a minute, but his good pupper is still ready to save the day. Specifically, Warner has now scheduled an animated movie based around DC’s Super Pets brand, which will land in theaters in May 2021, presumably on all fours.
DC has a long history of animals with super powers, almost all of them Good; Krypto the Super-Dog, Ace the Bat-Hound, Streaky the Super-Cat, Beppo the Super-Monkey, Comet the Super-Horse, and even Aquaman’s pet seahorse have all fought under the “Super Pets” moniker in the past. This new theatrical version of their adventures will be directed by Jared Stern, who dipped into the world of animated superheroes while writing The Lego Batman Movie. It’s not clear if it’ll be directly based on the Super Pets shorts that recently came out of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation, brand, but given that the last animated DC feature we got was the ridiculously fun Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, we’ve got our paws crossed for more of the same.
