There’s something uniquely pleasant about watching a handsome actor get smacked in the face, particularly if it is being done by a veteran actor who has earned that right. Let us not forget the great Harrison-Ford-punching-Ryan-Gosling celebration of 2017, in which the elder Blade Runner took great delight in regaling the world with the story of his “accidental” blow to Gosling’s face. In the run-up to the release of The Last Jedi, much was made of Carrie Fisher’s firm, open-palmed slap of Oscar Isaac. On The Late Show, Isaac said, “I think it ended up being like 27 takes of Carrie just leaning in, and every time she’d hit a different spot in my face,” and he told Vanity Fair, “She loved hitting me.”
And now, courtesy of Entertainment Tonight, we can witness that moment of triumph again and again, with some 41 different shots from two different angles of her winding up and knocking some sense into the beloved actor. It’s impressive watching the variety of his responses to these smacks, from surprise to disappointment to stoic acceptance, as well as the variety in the ferocity of Fisher’s slaps. Director Rian Johnson adds that it was Isaac’s first day on the set.
Of course, the gag reel also contains other outtakes, including some free-spirited riffing between John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran, which is all nice and fun. But we know what you’re here for. You’re here for smacks. Please enjoy 41 of them.
