Read no further if you don’t want to know that, among the likely hundreds, if not thousands, of stormtroopers we’ll be seeing in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there will be at least one famous guy whose face you won’t see. Definitely stop now if you don’t want spoiled the name of the man whom you would otherwise have no idea was even in the film, covered as his face will be by the hotly debated new stormtrooper mask. So, last chance to avoid a cameo that isn’t really a cameo, as explained by the old philosophical adage: “If a cameo falls in the forest, but is wearing a giant unwieldy helmet the entire time, does it count as a cameo?”
Now that’s out of the way, we can tell you The Independent recently talked with Simon Pegg, an actor everyone assumes will make a cameo in the film, given his friendship with J.J. Abrams. When the subject of his potential sneak appearance in the film arose, possibly disguised as a stormtrooper, Pegg seems to have blurted out something he wasn’t supposed to:
I wasn’t a Stormtrooper. Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper. I shouldn’t have said that.
So there you have it. Simon Pegg says the guy who plays James Bond is going to be in the movie, in a form that makes it impossible to know if that statement is true or not, because he’ll be hidden. Although, to be fair, we should have seen this coming. Those recently released Spectre photos were a dead giveaway:
UPDATE: Like almost everything about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this story is apparently hearsay. Pegg immediately walked back his comment, saying he was repeating a rumor he had heard. “Why is everyone leaping on this? It was a rumour last summer, wasn’t it? I read it in the paper. It may be untrue, like most of the other rumours, like Cumberbatch and Cruise being in it.” Of course, “may be untrue” is pretty weaksauce when it comes to denials. Then again, at this point most of us would turn our own families into Bantha fodder for even a little nugget of information about the film, so Pegg shouldn’t feel too bad either way.
