Since the launch of Larry King Now in 2012, Larry King’s web-series has continued the tradition he established over his decades on radio and television. On the most recent episode, King invited Odd Future’s Tyler The Creator on the show, and over the course of the 25-minute interview, King mines a laundry list of insights from Tyler, who appears to have an instant rapport with the storied broadcaster—so much so that he convinces King to take a selfie during a commercial break. Of all the quotes King pulls from Tyler, one of the most enlightening is that, not only does he hate being seen as a rapper, he hopes to venture into the world of film:
I’m pretty bored with it. It’s not interesting. In the future, I want to do films. I want people to mention my name next to Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino. I don’t want my name to be mentioned next to other rappers at all.
King masterfully veers between the playful and serious sides of the Odd Future mastermind during their time together, allowing Tyler to offer up his thoughts on race and language, while also seeing Tyler profess his love of Jennifer Lawrence. It’s a cause King quickly takes to, offering Tyler support when he states, “Jennifer, if you’re watching, call him.” It’s but one of several highlights of their strangely surreal time together.
