The White Stripes break up

It’s likely no surprise considering they’ve been more or less quiet since 2007, but today it’s become official: The White Stripes are done. The band’s (currently overloaded) official website posted the announcement, saying, “The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It’s for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” It also pointed out that White’s Third Man Records will “continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings,” but as far as making new material or appearing on stage together again, that seems to be over. (Though Jack White is, of course, plenty busy as a producer and member of The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, so he’s not going anywhere.)

In signing off, Jack and Meg themselves offered this bittersweet benediction:

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Sad, but did you hear that? We’re The White Stripes now! We’ll be sure to let you know when we’re playing next.
