An oft-proven formula of pandering-yet-cynical nostalgia has already yielded more than $100 million worldwide for The Smurfs, a film that the whole family can agree is playing right now, at an air-conditioned place where there are also sodas and snacks. So as demanded by the IF/THEN programming that drives all movie marketing, Sony has already staked out August 2, 2013 as the premiere date for a sequel, wisely choosing another summer day when the decision will come down to either watching little blue people make recognizable pop-culture references, or choking down air so stifling it’s practically solid. And since we have yet to evolve into stew-based lifeforms, again the choice will be obvious.
