The SAG Awards nominations threw some curveballs into awards season this morning with a couple of unexpected nominations in the film categories. The leading actress category was the most surprising, with the likes of Annette Bening, Ruth Negga, and Isabelle Huppert brushed aside in favor of Emily Blunt for The Girl On The Train and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins. They will compete alongside expected Oscar contenders Natalie Portman for Jackie, Emma Stone for La La Land, and Amy Adams for Arrival.

The actors of Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea continued to increase their haul of honors with support for both individual performances and their respective ensembles. Still, in that top category‚ÄĒthe cast prize‚ÄĒSAG members shockingly gave a spot to Captain Fantastic, an indie out of Sundance starring Viggo Mortensen, also nominated, as a man with unconventional childrearing philosophies.

In the television comedy categories, SAG members gave ensemble nods to the likes of The Big Bang Theory, Black-ish, Orange Is The New Black, Modern Family, and Veep. Meanwhile, the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series category was filled with newcomers, save for Robin Wright for House Of Cards. Both Millie Bobby Brown and Winona Ryder were recognized for their work in Stranger Things, which was also among the ensembles picked.

The SAG Awards air January 29. Lily Tomlin, who was also nominated for Grace And Frankie, is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Awards at the festivities.
