The Golden Globes also like Lincoln, but prefer The Newsroom to Mad Men

Swiftly burning through all the goodwill it earned by ousting Ricky Gervais in favor of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (a situation that no doubt prompted plenty of self-satisfied, disruptive snickering from Gervais),  this morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voiced its approval of Marilyn: The Musical, the journalistic crusade of Will McAvoy, and Nicole Kidman urinating on Zac Efron. The nominees for the 70th Annual Golden Globes are the typical mix of Oscar favorites (Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty), left-field contenders (the British rom-com Salmon Fishing In The Yemen), questionable television choices (The Newsroom for best drama and not Mad Men? At least Connie Britton’s on the list…), and naked attempts to cram as many big-name celebrities into the Beverly Hilton as possible. Hence the nod for Kidman’s campy turn in The Paperboy—which, it should be noted, has also been recognized by the Screen Actors’ Guild. And recognized by as terrible by most discerning filmgoers. Much funnier quips about these and other famous people who’ve been boozed up on the dime of the HFPA will be handed out alongside the Golden Globes on January 13, 2013.
