The Monkees turns 50 next year, and Rolling Stone reports that to commemorate the anniversary, the entire 58-episode run of the series will be released in a single Blu-ray collection. The series is being restored from its original film negatives, ensuring that every glorious mop top, paisley Nehru jacket, and pom-pom hat will pop in crisp HD.
Fans will also be pleased to know that commentary tracks are provided for the series by the entire band, including the late Davy Jones. In addition, the set will also feature the band’s 1968 film Head, and 1969’s 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, the Monkees equivalent of the Star Wars Holiday Special. Outtakes from Head, Monkees commercials for Kellogg’s, and a vinyl seven-inch featuring two previously unreleased TV mixes round out the collection.
The release is limited to 10,000 individually numbered sets, and interested parties can pre-order the collection today, which becomes available January 29, 2016. At $199, the set isn’t cheap, but consider it a small price to pay for the pleasure of reminding the Monkees Fan Club president in your life that they are getting old.
