La La Land

The Critics Choice Awards are usually a more low-stakes tease for the glitz and glamor of the Academy Awards, and that casual attitude is somewhat underlined by the choice to have comedian T.J. Miller host the show multiple years in a row. This year, Miller overshadowed the awards a bit this weekend when he decided to allegedly slap an Uber driver, but if this is the introduction of some new, unnecessarily violent persona for the gleefully wacky Silicon Valley star, it didn’t come through during the show. Instead, Miller focused his goofy jokes on the awards themselves, and like with last year’s big Mad Max: Fury Road wins, they were largely solid picks.

The People V. O.J. Simpson cleaned up a lot of the TV awards, including Sarah Paulson getting Best Actress In A Movie Made For Television Or Limited Series, Sterling K. Brown getting the Supporting Actor nod, Courtney B. Vance getting Best Actor in that same category, and the show itself winning the Best Movie Made For TV Or Limited Series. Also, in a move that won’t make the Critics Choice Awards popular with the future president, Alec Baldwin won a Best Guest Performer In A Comedy Series award for his work as SNL’s Donald Trump.

In the bigger TV categories, Louie Anderson won Best Supporting Actor for Baskets, Jane Krakowski won the actress version for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kate McKinnon won Best Actress for SNL, and Donald Glover won Best Actor for Atlanta. The Best Comedy Series award went to Silicon Valley, with Game Of Thrones winning Best Drama. Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood won the actress awards in the drama sections for Westworld, with Bob Odenkirk and John Lithgow getting the actor equivalents for Better Call Saul and The Crown.

In the world of movies, La La Land kicked a lot of butt, winning Best Picture, Best Score, Best Song, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and it tied for Best Original Screenplay with Manchester By The Sea. Outside of La La Land, Ryan Reynolds won Best Actor In A Comedy for Deadpool, Natalie Portman won Best Actress for Jackie and Casey Affleck won Best Actor for Manchester By The Sea.
