Say you’re an innocent person who just wants some help cooking their turkey for Thanksgiving. You call in to the Butterball hotline, thinking you’ve found your solution. But, alas, the “expert” on the line is just a late night host who wants to fuck around. That’s what happened to some people when Stephen Colbert visited the company’s call center and took a turn at a phone.
While, yes, the bit is funny, we do sympathize with the people subjected to his antics. It’s a stressful season, and the last thing anyone needs is Colbert pretending to be an air traffic controller at O’Hare when he’s supposed to be helping a confused cook. We probably won’t have threatened to call the police on him—as the distraught woman he was speaking to did—but it’s still kind of annoying.
