The young man now wearing Spider-Man’s tights and the star of The Witch are among the five up-and-comers who have been nominated for the BAFTA EE Rising Star Award. The contenders for the prize were announced this morning, and include the aforementioned Tom Holland and Anya Taylor-Joy as well as Manchester By The Sea’s Lucas Hedges, Loving’s Ruth Negga, and Laia Costa of the one-take German film Victoria. Past winners include John Boyega and Will Poulter, who was on the jury that selected the most recent crop of talent. The likes of Kristen Stewart and Eva Green have also accepted the trophy.
This is a publicly voted on award, and time will tell whether that means playing a beloved superhero will give Holland a leg up on his competition. The full lineup of BAFTA nominations is due out January 10, and the ceremony is scheduled for February 12.
