Nicole Richie is adapting her AOL web series into a reality show for VH1—allowing the rare opportunity to discuss three equally dated media entities in one sentence. Candidly Nicole looks to be another reality show in which a woman smart enough to manage an 11-year career in the entertainment industry pretends to be dumb so people will laugh at her. While that sounds awfully similar to The Simple Life—the 2003 reality show that turned Richie and Paris Hilton into household names—the trailer for Candidly Nicole at least plays up the fact that Richie is in on the joke. Her explanation of the show’s focus on “big issues, race, and equal rights” is juxtaposed with clips of her talking about tolerant gay chickens and 90210. The show premieres July 17, and AOL will simultaneously run a second season of the web series with different content.
