Stranger Things

This year, for the first time ever, MTV decided to throw TV awards into its usual movie awards show, dubbing the ceremony the MTV Movie And TV Awards. Plus, along with the new focus, the ceremony got a couple of new awards including Best American Story, Best Reality Competition, Best Tearjerker, and Best Fight Against The System. That last award, combined with MTV’s decision to abandon gender divisions—as in, just one acting category instead of separate ones for actor and actress—seemed to suggest that the network was going for something a bit more inclusive than the stuffier award shows.

If that was the goal, it came through pretty well in the winners themselves. Women won the Best Actor awards, with Emma Watson getting the movie version for Beauty And The Beast and Millie Bobby Brown winning the TV version for Stranger Things, but also Best Kiss went to Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome from Moonlight and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya won the Next Generation award.

Other winners include Trevor Noah getting Best Host, Ru Paul’s Drag Race winning Best Reality Competition, a key This Is Us moment winning the Tearjerker, and Stranger Things winning the inaugural Show Of The Year award. There was also an extended tribute to the Fast And Furious series, which won the Generation Award. In a relatively brief speech, Vin Diesel brought out a handful of his costars and thanked everyone for their support, throwing in a little shoutout to Paul Walker and calling back to the time the two of them won Best Duo many years ago.
