It’s October, which means The A.V. Club is swept up in our annual hunt for all things thrilling, chilling, or some combination of the two. In at least one instance, the horrors have found us: On October 24, we’ll be in New York sponsoring an evening of “speculative, spooky, sensational stories” curated by AVC favorite John Darnielle. It’s a seasonally appropriate edition of Selected Shorts, the weekly short-fiction series produced by Symphony Space and distributed by Public Radio International, featuring readers Molly Ringwald, Michael Shannon, Kathryn Erbe, and Peter Jay Fernandez. And Darnielle won’t just be there in his capacity as the National Book Award-nominated author of Wolf In White Van—The Mountain Goats frontman will also debut a new song with the extremely on-theme title of “Skeleton’s Tooth.”
Tickets are onsale here, but we’re giving away one pair to a lucky A.V. Club reader. Just send an email with your favorite Mountain Goats lyric to firstname.lastname@example.org by 11 a.m. Eastern on Friday, October 19. The winner will be picked at random and contacted with the details of how to claim their tickets. For inspiration, here’s Darnielle playing “Stabbed To Death Outside San Juan” in an episode of The A.V. Club’s One Track Mind.
