The 1995 Mortal Kombat movie has only two major redeeming qualities: It’s not 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and it brought Oliver Adams’ “Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)” into our collective lives. Beyond that major contribution to the sports arena DJ canon, the film was a pretty lousy action movie—which didn’t stop it from becoming something of a cult success, laying the groundwork for a whole bunch of inexpensive video game adaptations from its director, a young Paul W.S. Anderson.

Now—in the wake of the recent, critically positive release of Mortal Kombat 11—Warner Bros. has issued a hearty “Get over here!” to its long-gestating new entry in the franchise’s film canon, with Variety reporting that the James Wan-produced third theatrical Mortal Kombat film has been set for a March 5, 2021 release date. Commercial director Simon McQuoid—who’s been attached to the project since 2016—is apparently still directing; hopefully he has a line on a couple of really good techno producers to shore the soundtrack up.
