Deserved or not, Jeff Mangum has begun developing a mythos as the Thomas Pynchon of indie-pop, largely avoiding public appearances in the wake of Neutral Milk Hotel, and releasing dense solo works full of odd stylistic digressions. So when he does show up on stage, it’s always a big deal—like when he played a surprise show for about 75 people at Brooklyn’s The Schoolhouse on Saturday. According to witnesses, Mangum put the performance together last-minute without any publicity to make it as “easygoing as possible” and to ensure that you couldn’t see it. Anyway, apparently he played 10 Neutral Milk Hotel songs, five of which you can hear recordings of over at International Tapes. Here’s the setlist, via Pitchfork.
