Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys join The Voice

NBC’s The Voice is starting to resemble a game of giant, rotating, musical chairs, with Variety reporting today that coaches Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera are departing the show, to be replaced by an incoming Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys. The switch-off will come after the end of the show’s current tenth season, and will presumably involve someone hitting a big red button, followed by a lot of tedious wrangling and nonsense, in a fitting microcosm for The Voice itself.

Cyrus appeared on the show this year as a mentor to the contestants, training them in the delicate balancing act of musical talent and total nonsense that being Miley Cyrus entails. (Keys has also filled the mentor role in the past, appearing on the show’s seventh season.) Now, they’ll be stepping up to the task of selecting, grooming, and ultimately championing a single contestant for the role of the world’s next big musical superstar, just like all nine previous winners of The Voice, like That One Guy, and the world-famous Girl Who Sang That Song.
