Memory takes centerstage in the latest trailer for True Detective’s third season

There’s a number of striking lines in the latest trailer for True Detective’s third season. “It was just a case when I caught it, I didn’t know it’d be my last,” says Mahershala Ali’s detective. Later, he adds, “I never stopped coming up with theories about that case.” It’s another character, however, that provides what might be the most intriguing bit of dialogue: “What you don’t remember you don’t know you don’t remember.”

True Detective’s next outing, which hops between three different timelines, seems to be about memory, and the above trailer flits between a number of indelible images that will likely resonate much differently in the unfurling mind of Ali’s latter-day character.

True Detective’s third season flashes its badge to HBO on January 13.
