Generation-X kids were pretty well off during their formative years, pop-culture-wise: They could play some Donkey Kong, chat with their friends via AOL, and amuse themselves with great TV like The Ren & Stimpy Show, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and Doug. But none of these elements would have been as effective if they were silent, so Great Big Story has combined interviews with Charles Martinet (the voice of Mario), Billy West (the voice of Ren, Stimpy, Doug, and several Futurama characters), Alan Oppenheimer (the voice of Skeletor), and Elwood Edwards (the AOL “You’ve got mail” guy).
The video has some interesting facts about these voice stars, like that Martinet crashed his audition for Mario, or that at one point it was estimated that Edwards’ voice was heard 35 million times a day. Oppenheimer made another pop culture splash as the voice of Falkor, among other characters, in The NeverEnding Story. And all of these guys, unsurprisingly, seem to have nothing but fond memories of their time in the voice-work spotlight, making for a fun look at the real people behind the familiar faces.
