M83, the French electronic act that put out last year’s hit Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, have landed a deal to score Oblivion, the previously reported sci-fi movie starring Tom Cruise. As noted earlier, Oblivion finds Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski adapting his own graphic novel about a soldier left behind on a radiation-ravaged Earth after everyone flees to the clouds. He spends his days caring for the similarly earthbound robots that hunt for alien invaders—that is, until he meets a lovely lady who’s crashed in her spaceship, an event which ā€œforces him to question his world view.ā€

Kosinski made a similar move by tapping Daft Punk to scoreĀ Tron, and this promises to be an equally good match.Ā M83 not only has the fanbase to make the soundtrack a success independent of the film, but also a spooky, celestial vibe well-suited to the material. And frontman Anthony Gonzales (who recently moved to L.A. to make a go of it in the film world) already knows what he wants: As he tellsĀ IndieWire,Ā his vision ā€œis really to have a combination of very electronic moments, very M83, and sometimes merge into something more soundtrack-y, but my kind of soundtracks.ā€ You know, whatever that means.
