Now that he’s spent multiple years playing buff soldier guys in patriotic films and TV shows and enjoyed success as director of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski is ready to return to the role that made him famous: The Office’s resident camera-looking, prank-playing, shaggy-headed Jim Halpert.
During an interview for this week’s Variety, Krasinski made his interest in a show reunion clear. “People have asked if I would do ... a reunion type thing and, yes,” he says. “I need the incredible writers of our show to tell me what [Jim]’s doing because I’m kind of worried about him.”
Krasinski goes on to make it clear that, more than anything else, it’s his interest in exploring the character further that makes the idea of a return to The Office exciting. He calls Jim’s personality something that “felt to me like a representation of a lot of people that I know and certainly myself.” Now, over five years since the series finale, Krasinski is curious what Jim’s gotten up to. “[Jim] had a lot of hopes and dreams ... and then he went to Austin to live his life and I feel like the dreams are still in his head,” Krasinski says. “So let’s see what he’s doing now.”
This isn’t the first time Krasinski has expressed enthusiasm for a reunion. Earlier this year he said he’d be down to get the gang back together, preferably for a Christmas special, to see where Dunder Mifflin’s employees have ended up after all this time. It’s probably a good idea to give him what he wants. The world deserves to know how a shared fictional universe where Jim Halpert ended up joining the military, becoming a spy, and living through the first days of a noise-based apocalypse works, after all.
