Sakshi Tanwar will play Daenerys Targaryen

Sony Entertainment TV is reportedly remaking Game Of Thrones for Indian television, because the only thing better than one Game Of Thrones TV show is two Game Of Thrones TV shows. According to IGN, the series will be titled Rani Mahal, but specific details are a little fuzzy at the moment: Pakistani news network Ary News reports that the series will follow George R.R. Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire books, while Dramatize claims the series will be set in 1857 and will specifically revolve around the political machinations of royal women. (“Rani Mahal” is the name of a palace damaged by a British attack during the Indian Rebellion, a.k.a. India’s First Great War Of Independence, in 1857).

Regardless, some casting is already underway with Indian TV actress Sakshi Tanwar set to take on the role of Daenerys Targaryen, actress and model Anita Hassanandani as Cersei Lannister, and MTV India star Parth Samthaan as Jon Snow. It looks like the series will focus specifically on its female characters, with Daenerys serving as the main protagonist.

It’s not the first time an Indian production company has adapted a popular American series; back in 2013, Slumdog Millionaire’s Anil Kapoor starred in an Indian remake of 24. And while it sounds like Rani Mahal will very much be its own thing, it would be kind of funny if, after all the recent hubbub over spoilers, it somehow ended up beating both Martin and HBO to revealing the series’ endgame.
