Idris Elba to go Guerilla for Showtime miniseries

Pacific Rim

According to a report from Variety, Idris Elba and American Crime creator John Ridley are making a six-part miniseries for Showtime called Guerrilla. Ridley—who won an Academy Award for the screenplay for 12 Years A Slave—will “write the bulk of the episodes” and direct two of them, with Elba set to star and executive produce. The show will reportedly be set in ’70s London and focus on a British couple who “liberates a political prisoner and forms a radical underground cell.” These activists will set their sights on the “Black Power Desk,” a counter-intelligence unit tasked with “crushing all forms of black activism” in England. Rather than being all about “social upheaval,” though, Variety calls Guerrilla a “love story” and says it will actually revolve around “the relationship between the two characters at its center.” It’s unclear what specific role Elba will play, whether he’s part of the couple or the political prisoner they liberate, but he says the project is “nothing short of a masterclass in character building and storytelling,” adding that “TV is in for a treat.”
