Matt Nathanson has been plugging away for two decades, playing for a dedicated fanbase and occasionally popping his head into the mainstream. (You may remember 2009’s “Come On Get Higher.”) The singer-songwriter just announced the October 2 release of a new album—his tenth—and it’s called Show Me Your Fangs. (Pre-order the CD and/or vinyl right here, or digitally here.) His people sent our people the excellent title track, and he sent us an e-mail with his thoughts on the song (and a story about Sleater-Kinney!). Below his words you’ll find the song and tour dates for Nathanson’s upcoming acoustic tour. Enjoy.

When Sleater-Kinney was getting ready to put out their reunion record last year, I was reading all the reviews of it and getting super excited. I thought “How cool would it be if they called their new record Show Me Your Fangs?!” I just thought that would have been amazing… and, surprise, surprise, that WASN’T the title. So I took it for me. I got a song and an album title out of Show Me Your Fangs, especially once I found Angela Deane’s AMAZING painting that’s on the cover, it all totally clicked. I love this song. I love how dirty the groove sounds and how it’s just a dog-pile of words. Also, it’s always super rewarding when I’m able to describe someone exactly the way I see them. This song totally does that for me… especially the “dumpster-diving primitive heart” line. Ouch!
