Possibly out of 2012 paranoia, HBO is stockpiling massive reserves of comedies these days, with seemingly not a day passing without the network committing to something funny to potentially distract from the end of the world. Today it’s Documental, a half-hour series reuniting Tropic Thunder collaborators Justin Theroux, Ben Stiller, and Steve Coogan for a show about a filmmaker (Theroux) who tracks down his “equally inept” filmmaking idol (Coogan) and then documents his return to movies. It’s reportedly been around in some form or another for a while now—and in fact, it sounds an awful lot like Rain Of Madness, the “sequel” to Tropic Thunder that was the Hearts Of Darkness to its Apocalypse Now. Though, presumably, with new stuff.
