Grindhouse continues to spawn: Machete gets a release date, Hobo With A Shotgun now filming

The somewhat tepid box office for Grindhouse aside, the ersatz exploitation double-feature from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez may prove to be one of the most lucrative of the last decade—creatively speaking, at least—as its fake trailer segments continue to spawn potential tentpole projects of their own. The first of these, the Danny Trejo-starring Machete, just got its official release date—a plum Labor Day weekend slot that will likely give the film (which also stars Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, and Steven Seagal) a better running start than Grindhouse ever had. Meanwhile, Eli Roth is said to still be developing a feature-length version of Thanksgiving—the holiday slasher that is to vagina-imperiling trampolines what Jaws is to shark-infested waters—according to IMDB.

Now Ain’t It Cool is reporting that even the fan-made Hobo With A Shotgun, winner of the “make your own Grindhouse trailer” competition, is being developed into a full-length feature. In case you missed it (and unless you saw Grindhouse in Canada, you probably did), Hobo is the story of a homeless drifter who starts taking out his economically displaced rage on everyone from robbers to corrupt cops to a child-molesting Santa Claus. Director Jason Eisener is said to be currently filming in Halifax, Nova Scotia with Rutger Hauer taking over the starring role. This leaves only Edgar Wright’s Don’t and Rob Zombie’s Werewolf Women Of The SS to go (not that we’re necessarily eager to see either of them, Rob).
