In what is looking more and more like a concerted effort to get people who are not young adults to pay attention to a movie based on a series of books for young adults, Fox has announced that Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito will join Game Of Thrones’ Aidan Gillen in The Scorch Trials, its sequel to The Maze Runner. This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says Esposito will play Jorge, the leader of something called “The Cranks.” Now, assuming THR isn’t mistaken, this seems to be a departure from the books that the Maze Runner series is based on. The series’ wiki explains that “Cranks” are a group of crazy, zombie-like people, and Jorge is a guy who happened to live in their city. We don’t know why zombie people have a city, but Scorch Trials will probably do a better job explaining all of this than the impenetrable wiki of a series of sci-fi books. Anyway, now we just have to wait and see what other well-liked actors from critically acclaimed shows will join the Maze Runner series. Is Michael K. Williams doing anything? How about Kyle Chandler?
