Game Of Thrones took home an Emmy for Best Drama last night for the second year in a row, and among those who swarmed the stage to accept the award was George R.R. Martin himself. Now, the joke that Martin shouldn’t attend awards shows when he should be at home writing is getting about as old as Game Of Thrones sweeping awards. Sure, Martin ostensibly has a lot of writing to do and probably always will for the rest of his life, but how about instead of staying home to write he could just release some of the stuff he has already written but is keeping from the world?! After Game Of Thrones collected its last Emmy of the night, the GOT team headed backstage for the obligatory round of post-win press, where Martin hinted at the existence of a shit ton of prequel material.

“I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game Of Thrones, so there’s a lot of material there and I’m writing more,” Martin said. See, give the guy a break. He has been missing many social engagements in order to write, and he’s got unpublished prequels scattered throughout his house to prove it. But even as he teased the prequel material, he also followed it with a bit of a backpedal. “At the moment, we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish, so that’s all speculation,” he said.

Okay, but you were the one who was speculating in the first place, George. Did Martin accidentally say something he shouldn’t have, or is he just really bad at being coy? We take back what we said about giving him a break. Instead of being all “here’s a possible prequel haha jk,” maybe Martin should just focus on the books he’s supposed to be releasing “soon.” Meanwhile, GOT’s co-showrunner D.B. Weiss said of the upcoming seventh season, “it will be bigger and it will be better, but it will also be worse, but mostly better.” We can probably deduce from that adjective salad that more characters are going to die gruesome deaths in season seven.
