Paramount and Warner Bros. are reportedly both competing to be the studio to make a movie based on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, the popular video game series that combines the intrigue of covert operations with the rush of moving really, really slowly. According to Deadline, Paramount—which is already in the Clancy business with its many Jack Ryan movies, and business is passable—is currently the frontrunner to land the would-be franchise, despite the fact that the troubled productions of World War Z, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Ninja Turtles suggest that maybe Paramount should lay off the big-budget, effects-heavy franchises for a little while. But then, it would miss out on the unique property that is Splinter Cell, which would ostensibly differentiate the story of ass-kicking secret operative Sam Fisher from all other stories of ass-kicking secret operatives through the use of night goggles. Paramount has not yet even officially acquired Splinter Cell, but already the production is expected to be delayed at least 10 weeks for additional goggle reshoots.
