Hot on the heels of the casting announcements of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One comes this fan-made teaser for Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Created by David Johns, the video alludes to the good doctor’s origin as an overconfident neurosurgeon who seeks out further education from a mystical source once he badly damages his hands. Though the film allegedly won’t be an origin story, there will certainly be mentions of these events in the film when it comes out in November 2016.
The actual film is being written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara), and Jon Spaihts (original Prometheus writer), and directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister). Johns’ twist is a well done teaser that has a suitable amount of mystic mumbo jumbo on screen while teasing audiences with creepy slow music box sounds and a bearded Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular doctor. It’s simple but uses footage from other properties effectively to tell the story and achieve a darker tone than most other Marvel films (though you don’t hire Cumberbatch without getting some quips).
