Variety reports that NBC is doing a live production of Jesus Christ Superstar, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1970s take on the crucifixion complete with a groovy rock score. (Think Hair but more religious.) Fittingly, the show is scheduled for Easter of next year, April 1, 2018. The musical, with it’s ear-worm of a theme, is known for songs like “Heaven On Their Minds” and “Everything’s Alright.” It appears the network wants to packs its Jesus Christ Superstar with pop stars as NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt said in a statement that “we want to fill out this classic show with as many recording artists as possible to give proper voice to what is the original rock opera score.“ (Mind you, Fox, NBC’s main competitor in this arena, put on the Tyler Perry-narrated The Passion last year.)
NBC, meanwhile, also has Jennifer Lopez lined up to star in a version of Bye Bye Birdie, but now that Webber is in the mix it’s only a matter of time before we get Cats Live.
