Lines can get quite blurry in American Animals, documentarian Bart Layton’s inaugural jaunt into the world of fictional filmmaking. Well, partially—the film combines interviews with Warren Lipka, Spencer Reinhard, Chas Allen, and Eric Borsuk, four college students who were quickly busted after an impulsive heist on their university library back in 2004, with a fictional retelling of those same events, allowing the men to narrate the “based on a true story” movie version of their own lives.

In the exclusive clip from the film provided to The A.V. Club above, another line gets blurred as Warren (Evan Peters) makes a vague proposition to Eric (Jared Abrahamson) to participate in a plan he refers to as “not quite legal”—and that’s about it.
