Elisabeth Moss to star in horrifyingly relevant Hulu series of The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid's Tale

For those who have never read it, The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian sci-fi classic written by Margaret Atwood and set in a future where a series of environmental disasters have rendered much of the population infertile and the government is run by a totalitarian regime built on religious fundamentalism and extreme misogyny. It was written in 1985, and has become increasingly irrelevant since.

Just kidding! We’re creeping closer to Gilead every day. Now that’s true on more than one level, as Deadline reports that a Hulu series based on Atwood’s novel is in the works. (The novel was also adapted into a feature film back in 1990.) Elisabeth Moss, already a feminist icon thanks to her tenure as Peggy Olson on Mad Men, is set to star. The 100 co-executive producer Bruce Miller, who hopefully can’t fuck things up too bad with the end of the story already written, is being listed as creator, writer, and executive producer of the project.
