It’s an odd lot of DVDs this week, ushering us into the unofficial start of summer. Just consider this eclectic batch of titles from the Warner vault: John Boorman’s politicized 1995 jungle adventure Beyond Rangoon, David Cronenberg’s adaptation of David Henry Hwang’s Tony-winning play M. Butterfly, Michelangelo Antonioni’s trippy 1970 counterculture classic Zabriskie Point (review coming tomorrow), and a re-cut version of Hugh Hudson’s notorious 1985 flop Revolution. There’s plenty of fodder there for completist auteurists. For that matter, hardcore art-film devotees might want to take a look at Zeitgeist’s package of two well-regarded Philippe Garrel films, or Magnolia’s set of Wayne Wang’s twin indies A Thousand Years Of Good Prayers and Princess Of Nebraska, or Mamoru Oshii’s fantastical animated feature The Sky Crawlers.

It’s a good week for fans of culturally significant TV too, starting with the first season set of the groundbreaking late ‘80s sitcom hit Designing Women (review coming in two weeks), and also encompassing the complete Jeeves & Wooster and the complete Land Of The Lost—the latter packaged in a retro lunchbox. Like I said… this is a week for the connoisseurs and collectors to come out and bask.
