Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Today in news that seems explicitly designed to encourage references to a memorable gag from Avengers: Age Of Ultron where Captain America tells Iron Man to watch his language, Disney has officially announced that it’s not going to make any R-rated Marvel movies. This comes from Indiewire, which quotes Disney’s Bob Iger as saying that he and his company “don’t have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies,” even though conventional wisdom dictates that you should always copy what’s successful. Deadpool was R-rated and it made a ton of money, ergo, every superhero movie should be R-rated, right?

Apparently, that’s not how Disney feels about it, so we may never get to see any of the Avengers join Deadpool’s world of strong violence and language, sexual content, and graphic nudity, which really limits the storytelling potential of future Marvel movies. What if the Hulk is chasing some bad guy, and the only way to catch him is by running through a strip club? That’ll never happen now, and it’s a real shame.
