CBS manages to beat out defunct website in total Daytime Emmy nominations

Nominations were announced today for the Daytime Emmys, which are like the regular Emmys but with somehow even less prestige, and CBS led the field with 61 nominations. PBS is the runner-up with 44. TOLN.com, a defunct website that briefly revived the former ABC soap operas One Life To Live and All My Children last year, received 11 nods.

Those somewhat wacky numbers have their roots the Daytime Emmys’ grab bag of categories, which cover genres such as soap operas, game shows, kids’ cartoons, syndicated judge shows, daytime talk shows, and assorted miscellany. CBS is the only network with more than one traditional soap opera on the air, and because the Daytime Emmys were set up during an era when soaps dominated the midday hours, there are plenty of categories in which the Tiffany Network can put up gaudy numbers. CBS is also the one broadcast network with daytime game shows on its schedule—namely The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal—which helps, too.
