With California’s secession movement gaining momentum, it was only a matter of time before someone turned the state’s dissent into art. Young Terrorists creators Matteo Pizzolo and Amancay Nahuelpan have stepped up with Calexit, a “near-future, alternate reality comic” that imagines a world in which Californians told the rest of the country to fuck off. Well, that’s being a bit glib—Calexit tells the tale of an autocratic American president who wants to deport all immigrants, which prompts California to declare itself a sanctuary state. With its fictional Los Angeles under martial law (that’s going around), the story then follows a young smuggler and a resistance leader who are trying to escape occupied territory and make it to the now autonomous California.
Calexit also seeks to inform readers including information on real-life Senate and House seat midterm elections in 2018. You can get inspired (or depressed) when Calexit debuts in May.
