Buddy Miles RIP

Band Of Gypsys drummer Buddy Miles passed away Tuesday in Austin, Texas at the age of 60. A cause of death was not announced. Miles is best known for playing with Jimi Hendrix after the legendary guitarist broke up his band The Experience in 1969. Hendrix's new band The Band Of Gypsys (rounded out by Billy Cox on bass) played at Woodstock and recorded a great self-titled live album before Jimi died in 1970. Life was a bit of a roller coaster after that for Miles, who carried on with a solo career (1970's Them Changes is worth a listen) and collaborations with David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Barry White and George Clinton. Miles also spent time in jail in the late 1970s and early 1980s on drug related charges, but returned to the spotlight in 1986 when he served as the voice for the hugely successful California Raisins claymation TV ads. Here's a homemade music video for Miles' slow-burn funk cover of Neil Young's "Down By The River" from Them Changes.
