Bartkira, the strange–and strangely wonderful–mashup of the Japanese manga/anime classic Akira and The Simpsons, now has an animated trailer to go along with its three volumes of ongoing comics. Like Bartkira in print, “Bartkira The Animated Trailer” is a crowd-sourced work of art, with 50 volunteer artists banding together to create an animated synthesis of Springfield and Neo-Tokyo under the direction of Kaitlin Sullivan. The results are compelling in a head-scratching sort of way, approximating a nearly shot-for-shot remake of Akira’s original Japanese theatrical trailer, included below for comparison. Without prejudging an unreleased work of art too much, Bartkira looks roughly a billion times more enjoyable than the on-again, off-again live action Akira remake in production that’s apparently still happening.
