Aside from a handful of deserved wins, this was a pretty unremarkable Golden Globes ceremony for me. I was quick to lampoon the Emmys’ pricey approach to remote ceremonies—that is, sending loaded filming kits to each household—but I think that helped maintain the quality of the production in a way that made it even Read more

Well... this is unexpected. Viola smashed the Ma Rainey role to bits. But good for Andra!

Taylor Simone Ledward has had to shoulder all of her grief and speak for Chadwick after what is easily his most intensely revered performance of his career. I can’t imagine how bittersweet this moment is for her. And I can’t imagine a different outcome for the Oscars, either. Read more

I will never stop laughing at the nominees who were too busy to attend their living room. (I’m sure they had good reasons for skipping the night. It’s just funny, is all.)

Jane Fonda has both an illustrious career and a phenomenal record of authentic allyship. Hearing her give a real shout to the titles that weren’t offered proper recognition this year—I May Destroy You, in particular—is a nice reminder of her enduring perspective. Just tops.

Did I get a little choked up at the kiddos knowing who Chadwick Boseman is? Yes, I absolutely did.

Outside of that, it’s so strange to see the HFPA understand relevancy and the concept of an evolving audience enough to welcome TikTok personalities to the ceremony and not apply that same foresight to its mostly white, Read more

Just have to say that the inclusion of Sia’s Music is such a slap in the face. If they’re serious about inclusion, the HFPA is going to have to grapple with why it feels so comfortable slighting the disabled community in this way.

I was sure that original song was Sam Ashworth & Leslie Odom Jr.’s to lose. I won’t wallow, though. “Io Si (Seen)“ is rather gorgeous.

Jeff Daniels dressed for comfort. Good for him and anyone else who went that route. Why be uncomfortable in your own home?

I was curious as to how this bicoastal effort would look, and I’m happy to see that it’s kind of seamless. More than that, I’m thrilled to have survived multiple minutes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, of all people, talking about the importance of inclusivity.

In past interviews she’s mentioned offering her services to SNL when they were getting criticized for their lack of Black cast members. They never took her up on it, which is wild.

Oh, you were totally clear! She did tell a story about their time in Budapest that was pretty cool, but we just ran out of time. Getting Caruso’s perspective of that experience could only enhance things, really.

It’s not odd, but the point here is that the show was ostensibly a way to grow Punky up and they didn’t really take the time to actually do that. Rather, they kind of shoe-horned a cluster of references that did more to date her than introduce us to who she is today.

But that’s just my opinion! You can check it out Read more

Agreed on all accounts. There are definitely certain milestones for New York actors trying to break into industry and soaps used to be such a huge part of that, right there with Law & Order.

I think they can get to that place, certainly! The show does note that the divorce was very recent, though (like, within the year). It would have been interesting to see them explore that awkwardness a little more, but alas.
