Please, Hollywood motion-picture types, calm yourselves: There is enough 8-bit nostalgia for everyone. Days after news broke of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Console Wars project, a report from TheWrap says that Adam Sandler is set to star in his own retro-game-themed film, this one titled Pixels. The film is based on a 2010 short film (also called “Pixels”) created by visual-effects artist Patrick Jean. The casting of Sandler isn’t much of a surprise, as Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, has been working on the project for a few years now. The movie is expected to involve pixelated video game characters attacking Earth, as they do in the original video:
Any further details about the plot of the film are still hard to come by, but Seth Gordon is on board to executive produce the film. Gordon previously directed The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters, and TheWrap notes that his familiarity with the strange world of video games will come in handy:
Gordon was brought on because of his experience working with veteran gamers on “King of Kong,” as the heroes in “Pixels” are rumored to be video game experts who are recruited by the government to help deal with the threat.
He’s like an animal wrangler, you see, except with people who like video games instead of trained chimps.
